Belake is a Community Interest Company created to further the application of mathematics, statistics and data analysis to understand society and sociology, bringing together academics, experts and practitioners. We believe that mathematics can bring deep insight into the inner workings of society, from the micro, individual interaction level, to the macro, national and international levels.

We assist organisations to access mathematical or statistical research and data analysis methods and apply them to help the organisation achieve its goals. We work with commercial, public sector and third sector organisations. Our commercial services are exceptionally competitive, because we're a social enterprise. As part of our commitment to social responsibility, we assist third sector organisations to gain access to the same service, for a fraction of the cost, through our Access Programme

We are also an academic observatory. We support academic research by providing a single source of reference for the latest academic research, and a networking function to bring together academics from a variety of disciplines and locations to facilitate the collaboration on research projects. More information about this work stream can be found in the 'Academic' section of this website.

What is a community interest company?

A community interest company limited by guaranteed, like Belake CIC, is a company that has been set up to serve the community. Unlike charities, it can make a profit, but it must ensure that all of this profit is re-invested back in the community. No profit can be taken away by the owners of Belake. At Belake CIC we use our profit to provide our charitable programme at very reduced rates. The operations of community interest companies must be reported annually to the CIC regulator who assess whether such companies continue to pass the "community interest test".

Why are you called Belake?

Belake was chosen by our founding director, Steve Long, after his wife & two daughters. It also means "light" or "radiance" in the Kannada language principally used in the Bangalore area of India

Belake CIC was set up in memory of my father, Roy Long, who died on the same day Belake CIC was born, and gave us the wisdom to believe.
